I had the wonderful opportunity to create an illustration for the New York Times Book Review. “The Abstainer,” by Ian McGuire, is a novel set in Manchester in the late 1800s, in which an Irish separatist is pitted against a police constable all while navigating a crackdown on the Fenian brotherhood. Roddy Doyle sums up McGuire’s work as a “Dickens in the present tense, Dickens for the 21st century.”
