The God of Dark Laughter

The God of Dark Laughter

2019, SVA MFA Illustration

An exhibition of work shown in the Gramercy Gallery with the SVA MFA Illustration as a Visually Essay class of 2020. The work is from the Book Seminar class during the Fall 2018 semester, under the instruction of Viktor Koen. All of the work is based on the short story "The God of Dark Laughter" by Michael Chabon. (Published in the New Yorker)

I chose to illustrate five characters taken from the text in two obscured portraits. Using film noir and the graphics of movie posters as inspiration, I illustrated a portion of the physical character, displayed next to its corresponding setting. Chabon placed a deep emphasis on place and mood, which inspired me with each piece.
